Who’s for variety?

By Hao Siong

“Is that your final answer?”, “Lock in the lyrics!” Do these sentences sound familiar? If yes, then you probably would have heard of the local version of Don’t Forget the Lyrics. But have you wondered what other countries have to offer for their variety shows? Check out the reviews below.

Korean variety shows

Common themes
Like many variety shows, there can be many hosts hosting a single show so as to create a more lively atmosphere. This is a good way to showcase the different personalities of the hosts as well as adding to the laughter.
What’s Different?
Being a country that produces many idol groups, you can easily find a group of idols present in the variety shows broadcasted. You will be satisfied with both visuals and audio because of the great entertainment provided by your favorite idols.
So, what shows to watch out for?
Plenty, but I would strongly recommend Invincible Youth and We Got Married.
With all that being said, if you are a keen k-pop fan like me, these shows are not to be missed!

Ratings: 5/5 for explosive laughter and witty puns.

Taiwan variety shows

Common themes
Similar to the Korean variety shows, Taiwan variety shows also adapt the ‘multiple-hosts’ method for many of its shows, showing its feasibility. Captions are widely used to emphasize main points and are also helpful if we missed anything that had been said.
What’s Different?
In Taiwan, there are a lot of reality shows whereby ordinary people can rise to fame through participating in shows or competitions. It is not uncommon for people on the street to have been on television shows or know someone who has.
So, what shows to watch out for?
Personally, I would recommend Guess (我猜我猜我猜猜猜) and Variety Big Brother (综艺大哥大) because of its entertainment value and the wacky, witty hosts.

If you guys are up for much laughter, do take note of these shows.

Ratings: 4/5 for good hilarious hosts and segments of the show.

American variety shows

Common themes
You can find many American variety shows being distributed to other countries, such as Don’t Forget The Lyrics! and Deal or No Deal because the audience has the opportunity to play along.
More recent variety shows such as American Idol and America’s Got Talent are shows that produce top talents and also entertain audiences with surprise elements from time to time.

What’s Different?
There are many types of variety shows in America, such as game, reality and talk shows, each with a distinct style. Most game shows involve monetary rewards and different stages to the show. Talk shows are also very popular, with hosts like Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres who offer useful tips on managing daily life problems and human interest stories. It is no surprise that these shows are such a hit. In addition, you can also expect to see surprise guests as they appear on the shows from time to time.
So, what shows to watch out for?
The Price is Right and I Survived a Japanese Gameshow.
Feeling bold? Compete with the contestants during the show!

Ratings: 3.5/5 for brain-teasing challenges in game shows and good presentation.

Conclusion
Overall, Asian and American variety shows tend to be different in terms of number of hosts and type of style used, with or without captions and having different segments to a show. From idols in Korea to rising stars in Taiwan to nerve-wrecking challenges in America, there are many types of variety one can choose from.
Naturally, different people would go for different types of shows, what’s yours? @
